Charity?

Yesterday when I was sitting in the waiting room at my doctor’s office, I couldn’t help but overhearing the conversation of two middle-aged women that were sitting near me. Apparently one of the women’s mothers had just recently passed away and she was telling the other lady about the long and arduous process of cleaning out her mother’s house. Having lost grandparents, a father, a brother and numerous friends, I’m quite familiar with the process of clearing out the last of a dead person’s worldly goods.

So...naturally my heart went out to this lady until she said that only the moth-eaten clothes or the clothes with broken zippers were going to the Goodwill, the rest would be taken to a consignment shop to be sold.

This is a case of someone using the Goodwill as a dumping ground for their trash and being too got-dang lazy to dispose of the items properly. Don’t you just know that this woman was the type that would also demand a receipt so she could count it off as a charitable donation at tax time?

Folks, thrift shop need items that are in good shape and sellable.

Before you donate, ask yourself this:

“Would I buy it?”

If the answer is no, do everybody a great big favor and throw it in the trash.

Another pet peeve of mine is people that only give yucky stuff to food drives. You know what I mean, the people that go through their panty or kitchen cabinets and donate stuff like canned rutabagas, potted meat, Vienna sausages, off-brand pinto beans and cheap-o packages of 3 for a $1.00 macaroni and cheese or ramen. Just because someone is poor or going through hard times doesn’t mean they deserve to eat nasty stuff. Only donate food you’d like to eat. Throw those cans of rutabagas in the trash, I mean…damn, why da fuck did you buy them in the first place?

Okay, I’m stepping down off my high horse. True, that woman did get me all worked up (no shit, right), but I guess I should be thanking her because it got me off my lazy ass and writing again.

Hugs and gropes

Love you all

i UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU MEAN, BUT I ALSO FEEL LIKE EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS. IN THE FOOD AREA AT LEAST, SHOOT SOMEONE MIGHT BE POOR THAT ONLY LIKES THOSE RUTABAGAS. So I Say donate all you can, more variety is a better chance to please the variety of poor we have. Im sure they all cant eat and do not eat the same things. But I understand how you mean it intent wise.

I don't think there is ever an excuse for throwing out food. But yeah, if the food drive comes through, give them good stuff. Here if clothes are not good enough to sell they are sent to 3rd world countries, and if not good enough for that turned into rags then sold to companies. Waste not want not. One mans junk is another's treasure and all that. But if you throw things in the garbage, IMHO, you should ask yourself "Can't someone use this?"
